The Gouden Bocht complex, located at Herengracht 459–469 in Amsterdam, is an ensemble of three modern buildings dating back to the 17th century. These architectural landmarks, situated in the heart of the canal district, are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.
With a total area of nearly 10,000 square meters, primarily consisting of office space, the three buildings are undergoing extensive sustainability upgrades and renovations. A key aspect of this project is the ambition to make the complex completely gas-free upon completion, aiming for a COâ‚‚ reduction of approximately 70%.
Sustainability and Renewal
Preserving the characteristic façade and ensuring high-quality finishes are of great importance, as the complex holds a protected heritage status. The existing steel windows set in wooden frames will be replaced by insulated aluminum frames with triple glazing. This modernization—combined with strategic thermal insulation and cold bridge interruptions on the interior—maintains the building’s authentic appearance while significantly enhancing its energy efficiency.
The sustainability upgrades also include interior wall insulation, with careful preservation of characteristic elements such as natural stone, copper, and slate. Windows and façades are being renewed, while the building systems are being updated using sustainable technologies. On each floor, the interior fit-out is being completely renewed, resulting in a contemporary and functional layout of the spaces.
Subsidy support?
This is another fantastic project to be involved in. We applied for several EIAs for this sustainable initiative, all of which have now been approved. The design report led to the awarding of a BREEAM-NL In-Use Excellent rating for the MIA. As this is a phased process, it’s especially important for both us and the client to stay closely involved and manage deadlines carefully.
