When repair work is more extensive than regular maintenance, it is referred to as restoration. National monuments are often closely tied to their region and local culture. Therefore, the national government allocates an annual budget to provinces to subsidize restorations. Each province spends this amount, sometimes supplemented with its own budget, in its own way. In line with their own cultural/heritage policies, most provinces have established a subsidy scheme for restorations.
The subsidy can be applied for repair work on the monumental parts. In most provinces, up to 50% of the costs can be subsidized. The province does set requirements for the restoration. Is the restoration part of a change of use? Are energy-saving measures being applied? And what is the applicant’s own contribution?
The exact conditions and application deadlines vary per province. Subsidies are granted on a first-come, first-served basis or based on a scoring system regarding requirements and co-financing; this also varies by province.
