This stolp farmhouse in Berkhout is being transformed into two beautiful homes. The origins of the farmhouse possibly date back to the late 17th or 18th century. It was designed in a neoclassical style with some Jugendstil features.
Historical significance
The stolp farmhouses in North Holland are distinguished by their pyramid-shaped roofs, giving the rural landscape a unique and recognizable silhouette. Although these northern pyramids are no longer used for agricultural purposes, most stolp farmhouses have been given a new function. They now mainly serve as residential farmhouses, but also as offices, shops, practice spaces, or hospitality venues. In this way, their characteristic architecture is preserved within the landscape.
Bas Koster, the client and owner of the monument, says:
“Fully restoring a provincial monument brings a lot of unknown challenges for us as private buyers. From the very first moment we spoke with Marloes from Van Draeckeburgh, I knew it was going to be a successful application. Her enthusiasm, customer focus, and excellent knowledge of the subject gave us great confidence. Throughout the entire process, she supported us perfectly, responded promptly to our many questions, and proactively engaged with the Province of North Holland. For us, Van Draeckeburgh was exactly the specialist we needed.”
Subsidy Support
For this project, we had the opportunity to apply for a restoration grant for provincial monuments from the Province of North Holland. It was a real pleasure to guide this subsidy process.
Project manager Marloes says:
“This stolp farmhouse in Berkhout is without a doubt one of the most inspiring projects I’ve had the pleasure of guiding through the subsidy process. Two private owners are transforming the stolp into two contemporary homes—while preserving all the monumental features. I can’t wait to see the final result! It’s incredibly rewarding to have helped secure funding to make this project possible. A fun fact: it’s a provincial monument, and this was the very first time we were able to submit a grant application for one.”
