Incentive Scheme for Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition (SDE++)

Sustainability is high on the government agenda. To be climate-neutral by 2050, we all need to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 55% by 2030. The SDE++ helps achieve these goals. SDE++ is intended for companies and (non-)profit organizations in sectors such as industry, mobility, electricity, agriculture, and the built environment. With this scheme, the Dutch government promotes both the production of sustainable energy and CO2 reduction. This ensures that the energy transition in the Netherlands remains feasible and affordable.

The benefits and subsidy amount

The SDE++ scheme stimulates the sustainable energy transition in the Netherlands. The subsidy compensates for the unprofitable portion of green electricity. Per kWh of energy generated, in 2021 you could receive up to 7.2 cents for installations up to 1 MW and 6.5 cents for larger installations. This is called the basic amount. The basic amount is adjusted with a correction amount. This correction amount depends on the development of the electricity price and the value of guarantees of origin. When the electricity price rises, the correction amount rises as well. In this way, you always receive the same benefit from the energy generated by your solar panels.

Important conditions

  • At least 15 kWp of capacity must be installed (approximately 55 panels).
  • The connection must be larger than 3 x 80 Amperes.
  • If a zoning permit is required for new construction, field installation, or placing panels on a monument, the necessary permit must be granted before an SDE++ application can be submitted. The permit does not yet need to be final.
  • For installations larger than 1 MW, a feasibility study must be submitted with the application.

Because the subsidy amounts have been significantly reduced, we advise against applying if the project involves fewer than 300 panels.

SDE++ has four tranches, of which only three are relevant for solar panels. For each tranche, the maximum application amount per kWh increases. You can apply only once per subsidy tranche, and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. You must therefore make a choice. If you apply for the first tranche, the subsidy is relatively low, but the chance of the budget being exhausted is also lower. If you apply in a later tranche, the risk of budget exhaustion is higher. Experience has shown that applying in the last tranche is pointless.
